I am sorry, but the hate filled, excuse driven "feminist movement" of today, is just going to set womens' progress farther back. She has nothing creative to contribute, but she sure has figured out a way to make money by basically just talking **** with no solutions, and blaming others for just the most stupid ****. All she cares about is lining her pockets, with your outrage. Just like your new role model Anita Sarkeesian.

That is the whole problem with the modern "feminist" argument, it is just them blaming the devil white man. “There are black people now who could do the job, but if you are only looking for candidates from the same places and you know they are predominately male and white, then you’re not going to reach diverse communities.Īgain, why is it the employers job to search over God's green earth for talented people? Sorry but if I am interested in game design or whatever, I actively apply and look for the jobs. Odelola argues that there is black talent available now, but the games industry just isn’t looking in the right places or the recruitment process is excluding them. ("You have to prove to me right here, right now that sexism exists" is one of those lovely flavors of obfuscation - or derailment, more specifically - that I was mentioning crop up whenever people make an honest effort to address the issue.)įeminists have, and continue to, offer input, suggestions, and solutions to the problems the video game industry and culture have with systemic sexism. So, no, I'm not going to try prove the existence of sexism in video game culture or the video game industry to anyone in the span of a single forum post, but information on it ( including its impact) is readily available for anyone who is interested in educating themselves, including first-person accounts, plenty of journalism and scholarly studies.

Systemic sexism in the video game industry is a topic that is probably too broad and multifaceted to be encapsulated even in a doctoral dissertation, let alone a post on the SWTOR Off-Topic message board. I never proffered my brief description of the underlying issue as a fleshed-out argument proving its existence. The woman she was describing seems to have taken a standpoint of "SWTOR has sexist elements, so if you buy / play SWTOR then you are being complicit in sexism and are a bad person." sounds exactly like the position that had OP so bothered. Ironically, your implication that one should boycott all works that they honestly believe contain any sexist content.

But that is not the only way people can apply pressure to try to influence reforms, and no one gives up their right to speak out about issues with a product just because they bought it.

If someone feels that the sexist (or racist, or otherwise problematic) content of a particular work is particularly severe, then refusing to purchase that work certainly makes sense. People can, and should, criticize even the works that they love, and recognizing such flaws doesn't mean they have to shun the work as a whole. There is no contradiction in being an overall fan of a work, while at the same time recognizing, acknowledging, and yes, even openly critiquing certain problematic elements that are present in that same work. Put simply, one reason for why someone might "indulge in" works that involve sexist content, even if that person is against sexism, is that people can have nuanced, complicated opinions regarding a work - it's not a binary where "this is absolutely flawless" vs "this is complete trash" are the only valid options.
